Element Apartments, design, social, water, intelligence and EDGE

This week Rod Beel, EDGE Architectural’s Research and Development Manager travelled to Canberra to visit Element Apartments.

Located in Kingston, on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin, Element is EDGE Architectural’s second major apartment project due for completion in Canberra this year, with Arte Apartments almost complete. Designed by Cox Architects, when finished, Element will feature 108 EDGE Architectural double glazed MAX™ bi-fold doors and MAX™ 100mm front double glazed framing systems. Over two four storey buildings, tenants will enjoy five panel EDGE  bi-fold doors in each apartment. When open, MAX™ double glazed bi-fold doors will provide a fluid connection to outside. When closed, residence will enjoy increased interior comfort, thanks to superior thermal performance. Designed with the end user in mind, EDGE Architectural’s range of thermally broken, double glazed and single glazed bi-fold doors are flexible, durable and thanks to quality hardware and innovative design, able to achieve larger panel spans compared to standard bi-fold systems.

Element on Element

Design Element

ELEMENT offers a combination of studios, one and two-bedroom apartments along with unique two-storey skyhomes on the upper levels, forming the jewel in the crown and taking in some of the best views of the harbour. Cox has selected a materials palette, which responds to both the harbour and art’s precinct location by utilising raw concrete, timber and glass with feature artwork to the building façade, lobbies and light wells.  Oversized communal corridors, galleries and rooftop gardens combine with glass fronted lift cars which seamlessly integrate with the meticulously designed interiors which all feature Miele appliances and integrated fridge and dishwasher.

Water Element

The majority of apartments feature water views including direct harbour frontage, Norgrove Park or harbour views across Giles St Plaza.  All resident’s will enjoy the amenity of the harbour through the glass fronted lifts, rooftop gardens or on the Promenade retail and café strip.

Social Element

Reminiscent of Melbourne’s Southbank or Sydney’s King Street Wharf, ELEMENT is set within the new cultural heartbeat of Canberra within a short walk to the Old Bus Depot Markets, the Canberra Glassworks and Fitters’ Workshop.  Restaurants, cafes and specialty retail shops will feature along the new harbour Promenade with the Kingston and Manuka precincts and the Parliamentary Triangle close by. Residents living at ELEMENT will enjoy a new level of social interaction through wireless hotspots on either of the two rooftop gardens or by booking the communal bicycles to explore the Kingston Foreshore Precinct or the surrounds of Lake Burley Griffin.  The communal cinema and web based free phone calls within ELEMENT will provide a new dimension to apartment communication and entertainment. Booths and the barbeque can be booked for private resident enjoyment overlooking the harbour and marina.

Intelligence Element

Sophisticated technology is key at ELEMENT, where the focus is on lower living costs, greater comfort and convenience and a connected lifestyle. In what is a first for Canberra, ELEMENT will utilise intelligent web based technology, accessible online and by mobile devices which will revolutionise the way you live. Residents can book the facilities, access communal bikes and hire car, track deliveries to the building all at the touch of a button. Residents will require just one device to gain access to the building, the rooftop garden, cinema and bikes. Initiatives such as a virtual building manager, energy monitoring of communal solar power, rainwater harvesting and intelligent lighting systems have been undertaken to significantly lower body corporate levies. ELEMENT will offer wireless hotspots in communal areas and advanced number plate recognition software will allow effortless car park access.
