Bega Hospital, a rising EDGE Architectural show piece

Bega, not just a great place to buy delicious cheese. Soon Bega will also be home to a new hospital with EDGE Architectural windows and doors.

BVN Donovan Hill are the architects behind Bega Valley Shire’s new South East Regional Hospital (SERH). Located just outside Bega, Southern NSW Local Health District Chief Executive, Dr Max Alexander has explained; “the South East Regional Hospital will be a state-of-the-art teaching facility which will provide a wide range of services and treatment for Bega Valley residents who currently have to travel out of the area to get their health care”. Come 2016, Bega Valley residence will have convenient access to the very best medical assistance with the development to include:

  • Emergency department including an emergency medical unit
  • Intensive care and critical care services
  • Additional medical and surgical beds
  • New and dedicated rehabilitation service
  • Dedicated palliative care beds
  • Medical oncology unit
  • Renal dialysis unit
  • Maternity and neonatal unit
  • Paediatric unit
  • Expansion of primary and community health care and ambulatory services
  • Speciality mental heath services

SERH is the largest infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in Bega and the first time a tower crane has been erected in the area. This huge development has a capital budget of $171.6 million with $160.1 million funded through the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund. A further $10 million has also been allocated to the project by the NSW Government. On top of these figures, an additional $1.474M has been added to the capital budget by the NSW Government for additional oral health services. Once complete, the South East Regional Hospital will have generated up to 1700 jobs across NSW. The project workforce onsite will peak at 300. To get an overview of just how significant this hospital will be for the local community and to understand the development scope, take some time to watch SERH’s video below.

Not only will SERH provide state-of-the-art medical facilities, it will also enjoy superior performing architectural windows and doors thanks to EDGE Architectural. BVN Donovan Hill’s contemporary design features the first fabrication of EDGE’s MAX™ double glazed 182mm unitised curtain wall. Designed with 34mm IGU’s, to provide increased strength for larger glazed panels, EDGE Architectural’s MAX™ curtain wall is set to be the developments main architectural feature. 1oomm MAX™ front double glazed framing systems will used across the remainder of the development. Coupled with jockey sashes, MAX™ will provide patient rooms with exceptional acoustic performance and hygienic venetian blind systems.

EDGE Architectural’s double glazed framing systems have been fabricated and are currently being fitted. EDGE will be watching this project over the next year as it approaches completion. Here are some current progress photos of how SERH is looking.
