University of Melbourne School of Design: A living structure designed to engage, promote learning

An award winning project featuring innovative window systems

Australia’s architectural award season is wrapping up and, to the surprise of no one, the School of Design garnered much recognition, including Best Educational Architecture at the 2015 Victorian Architecture Awards.

John Wardle Architects and NADAAA imagined and designed the University of Melbourne School of Design building to inspire learning and research. The building is itself a pedagogical tool, meaning it uses the actual physical spaces as resources for learning. The researcher, the student and the visitor all engage with the built environment.
Australia’s future architecture and construction project management visionaries can now learn within an educational hub reflective of the very best building technology available. The School of Design showcases a superior application of design elements and product specification.

Seelite Windows and Doors fabricated and installed EDGE Architectural systems from Aluminium Industries (Ai), in order to achieve the design and efficiency performance specifications of the building. EDGE Architectural elements of the new building include the MAX™ 150mm structural glazed system and custom aluminium louvres for the external fixed shading systems.

The building integrates many features intended to help the building “breathe” and contribute to the natural ventilation. The south façade’s operable awning sashes can be opened up to 125mm by individuals inside the building. Digital manufacturing and machining of aluminium systems, including the massive glazed ceiling, was provided by aiFAB. Members of the EDGE Architectural team provided design and specification support to Seelite.

A few months before it opened, the School of Design building received a 6 Star Green Star Design – Education Design v1 Rating by the Green Building Council of Australia.

The 6 Star Rating represents ‘World Leadership’ in environmentally sustainable building practices. Only 12 buildings in Australia have received a 6 Star Green Star Education Design – v1 rating, and the School of Design building is the largest to achieve this. It is also the only one to ever be awarded all 10 innovation points possible in the evaluation criteria. This speaks to the quality of the design and construction.
